Union Center Boulevard
A massive Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), this project gets rid of left-hand turns to get onto the I-75 interstate as a way to increase the interstate’s capacity and West Chester’s economic prosperity.
- Start Date: May 2019
- Owner: West Chester Board of Trustees
- Lead Contractor: John R. Jurgensen
- Lead Designer: Office of Butler County Engineers
- Project Type: Interchange Construction
- Expected End Date: July 2020
About this Project
With The West Chester Board of Trustees, the West Chester Township, and the Butler County Engineer’s Office, this project transforms the interchange to further improve the quality of travel for the 50,000+ cars that use it. Union Center Boulevard allows West Chester Township to sustain its economic prosperity.

Due to the large increase in traffic over the past five years, the project will minimize traffic delays at the interchange.
Infrastructure and economic development go hand-in-hand. Improvements to Union Center Boulevard like a DDI will help West Chester sustain itself as a center of economic activity in its region.
The project will introduce a pedestrian walkway. This will continue the human flow between 22 million square feet of retail, corporate offices, and entertainment and industrial development that has generated more than 25,000 jobs since 1997.
Since the interchange’s opening in 1997, the surrounding area has seen an investment of $1.5 billion in corporate offices, manufacturing, distribution, research/design, and commercial projects. The project’s main goal is to convert the existing interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange in order to increase traffic movement and safety within Union Center Boulevard. Construction began on May 2019. It is expected to be completed by July 31st, 2020. With a very tight schedule and much work to be done in a short time, this project will demonstrate John R. Jurgensen’s skills in construction management and efficiency.
What is a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)?
A diverging diamond interchange (or DDI) is a double crossover diamond interchange in which the two directions of traffic on the non-freeway road cross to the opposite side on both sides of the bridge at the freeway. First implemented in the U.S. in 2015, this civil engineering idea is a relatively new concept that has been studied to decrease traffic flow and major collisions by more than 60 percent.
